What is eBay doing with Magento? – That is the open question for everyone who is using and appreciating Magento as an open source alternative.
Last week eBay introduced the program for their X.Commerce Innovate Conference, opening up a first glance at the direction to be taken at the conference.
As per the announcement:
"Themed, “Our Platform, Your Imagination,” the conference will be taking place October 12-13 at the Moscone West conference center in San Francisco. X.commerce Innovate will mark the opening of the X.commerce platform for all of you that will be driving new, innovative commerce solutions that stand at the forefront of the future of commerce.
A cloud-based commerce platform using an open environment, the X.commerce platform will enable developers, merchants and service providers to create innovative solutions in the commerce space, helping retailers of all sizes keep up with the pace of consumer demands."
Over 50 speakers from eBay and its daughter companies fill the program schedule and will steer the participants into the eBay world. (Most certainly someone will remember to plan the follow-up sessions on how Magento users and developers can use Amazon services… ;-)
The X.Commerce track contains so far two sessions. The general session "On the Road to Monetization" is described as:
"Our intention is to make X.commerce a gold mine for you. With mechanisms to leverage the right commerce tools, and to get new business leads. Where developers can make connections with merchants, and chime in on expert idea-exchange forums. This is how developers gear up for the great X.commerce rush."
X.Commerce is looking like it is moving in the direction of an innovations and idea marketplace. The second X.Commerce session "From Code to Capability" is directed more at developers. A worthwhile track to check out is that for Magento. There, Magento has a full agenda planned.
From the point of view of Magento, the takeover from eBay bears the risk that Magento might be completely assimilated by the e-commerce giant. But at least the conference program isn’t giving any indications of this, besides the overwhelming number of eBay speakers.

Thanks for the nice write up on the concerns.
If you're interested in finding out the scoop directly, I'd be happy to discuss. My email is matthew@x.com.
In short, we're going to take a ton of the assets of eBay and will hook them up with Magento. Magento will be a primary product of X.commerce and will be the easiest entry point for most customers. Magento will remain true to its roots. Roy Rubin and I are on the same page as to how to create a greater future where the parts marry well together. We remain tremendously excited about the possibilities we can provide for everyone in our collective communities and developer networks.
Thanks!,
Matthew

I am not sure about the future of Megento. It is depend on the ebay, after reading this post, i can say ebay is taking more interest into X.Commerce rather than promoting the Magento, so it's really looks ? for the future of ebay.
