Inc. magazine has released their Inc 500/5000 this September. Like last year, Exciting Commerce took a closer look at the top 50 fastest growing retailers.
After Woot! and Diapers.com led the 2008 and 2009 retail lists (respectively), the 2010 list is now led by fashion startup ModCloth with $15.6 million in revenues and a three year growth of 17191 %.ModCloth recently received a $20 million capital injection from Accel Partners, who have also in the past invested in Diapers.com. Our short analysis of ModCloth:
“ModCloth addresses a number of topics which will become prevalent for the online fashion industry in the coming years. Besides crowdsourcing and community elements, ModCloth focuses predominantly on in-house brands”.
Other trends in the US:
- Family products are still on the fast track: Besides Diapers.com who led last year’s list and whose owners were also represented on this year’s list, Babyearth has made it on the list. Babyearth is a platform for ecologically sound baby products and boasts a three year growth rate of 842 % and 2009 revenues of $8.4 million. Chasing Fireflies is a “children’s boutique” and wants to accompany children along the various stages of their development. For example the site has a tooth fairy section and also a section for birthdays. Chasing Fireflies has revenues of $28.4 million and a three year growth rate of 2249 %. Another listed startup in this field is Chit Chat Baby.
- Furniture: Everything2go sells furniture for offices, homes and schools and reaches with that $11.6 million in revenues. Inmod specializes in modern furniture and focuses on environmentally friendly products. Revenues are at $3.4 million. Sandia Office Supply offers all you need for offices.
- Fashion: From the fashion industry, Fashionpile made the list with $4 million of revenues generated from sales of second-hand luxury handbags. Charming Charlie wants to help women to complete their outfits and is making revenues of $51.9 million by specializing in earrings, handbags, belts and other accessories.
- Sport is again a strong theme for 2010. Crosslake Sales sells all types of sport articles and turns over $3.6 million with a three year growth rate of 779 %. 2 Wheel Bikes specializes in bicycles and reaches revenues of $2.1 million. TrySports offers products for sport activities such as swimming, running, triathlon and cycling. TrySports has $4.7 million of revenues. Bodybuilding.com sells health products and nutritional supplements and turns over $148.8 million of revenue.
One of the rising stars in the ReCommerce sector is Gazelle, listed not in the retail section but rather in “Consumer Products & Services”
