As ReadWriteWeb reports, eBay has switched on their first Open Social applications for eBay sellers.
Analogue to the Facebook model, developers can integrate their third party applications directly into eBay sites. The applications should (see guidelines) be rather utilitarian and support the sales process and thus are not as spectacular as with Facebook.
For application developers it is now also possible to more tightly integrate their previously developed stand alone tools into the eBay environment.
eBay had introduced this initiative as “Project Echo” at the last developer’s conference. Up till now seven demo-apps clarify the principle. An expected larger (global) rollout is expected mid year at the earliest.
The most exciting question still remains: when and how will Amazon follow?
