Auctionbytes posted a couple of very good articles on the latest developments at eBay ("eBay Replaces Community with Commodity"):
"eBay cancelled its annual eBay Live conference and no longer holds monthly 'Town Hall' meetings with members.
eBay has been making a series of changes that, when put together, looks like a very different company from even 1 year ago."
On the same note, this interview with an eBay veteran:
"If all of the Web 2.0 companies realize the importance of community, the company that once was the symbol of community should get back in the game."
At the same time, ex-eBay employees in Germany are adding new drive to their own projects which attempt to revive the old eBay spirit.

What surprises me the most is the stagnation at eBay. It's 2008 and safe to say that eBay is still a web 1.0-1.5 site from practically all perspectives. This seems to be the case with many of giants what started the web (e.i. Amazon). Their business model is staying relatively close to where it has always been while a ton of new models are surfacing everywhere.
