Hangout.net presented a compelling, fully customizable 3D-environment ("myplace") for personal homepages on and off social networks this morning at the Techcrunch50 conference.
From their profile:
"Hangout enables 16-24 year olds to bring off-line, social hangout activities on-line by combining the casual Web with immersive 3D. Think MySpace becomes Myplace where each user has their own room or room(s) that are highly personalized, stylized and private virtual 3D rooms where they can invite their friends to hang out and share their media experiences together (voice chat, magazines, photos, videos, gifts and music) in real time."
Hangout.net stresses that it wants their 3D apps run in regular browsers with regular hardware. The "hangout" can easily be integrated on personal homepages.
They also do a great job with product placements. They have deals with poster shops or t-shirt sites like Threadless. Their products can easily be put on the avatars or the posters on the wall.
We definitely agree with this statement:
"Hangout.net was outstanding and the demonstration was perfectly put together. The ecommerce integration is slick and provides an immediate business model."
Virtual World News writes:
"The big pitch for monetization seems to be selling real-world products in the virtual world. The pitch mentioned off hand special powers gained by drinking a Monster energy drink, but the only official partnership mentioned was with AllPosters.com."
